New patents are issued by the USPTO on Tuesdays. Today's Spotlight Patents concern aspects of digital watermarking and digital fingerprinting. Assigned to Intel, the first patent addresses techniques for video watermarking. Assigned to Gracenote, the second patent addresses techniques for media channel identification with multi-match detection and disambiguation based on location.
10,057,658, "Video watermarking techniques," assigned to Intel.
Improved techniques for video watermarking are described. In one embodiment, for example, an apparatus may comprise a processor circuit and a watermarking module for execution by the processor circuit to generate disabled video content through modification of a video content item, send a common stream comprising the disabled video content, and send a private content key for the disabled video content, the private content key defining a watermark for the video content item. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
10,057,638, "Media channel identification with multi-match detection and disambiguation based on location," assigned to Gracenote.
Disclosed are methods and systems involving location-based disambiguation of media channel identification, in a scenario where a fingerprint of media content being rendered by a media presentation device matches multiple reference fingerprints corresponding respectively with multiple different media channels. Upon detecting such a multi-match situation, a server or other entity will use a location of the media presentation device as a basis to disambiguate between the matching reference fingerprints and thus to determine the channel on which the media content being rendered by the media presentation device is arriving.
