New patents are issued by the USPTO on Tuesdays. Both of today's Spotlight Patents concern aspects of digital rights management. Assigned to Qualcomm, the first patent addresses countermeasures against audio/video content security domain crossing. Assigned to Toshiba (JP), the second patent addresses in part techniques for copyright protection.
9,736,536, "Countermeasures against audio/video content security domain crossing," assigned to Qualcomm.
Abstract
Techniques for preventing circumvention of digital rights management protections on electronic content are provided. A method according to these techniques includes receiving a content stream, obtaining samples from the content stream, generating a histogram based on the samples from the content stream, classifying the content stream as including audio content or non-audio content based on the histogram, and modifying portions of the content stream responsive to classifying the content stream as including non-audio content. The content stream can be modified such that any video content included in the content stream would be rendered unplayable, while audio content included in the content stream remains playable.
9,736,513, "Communication device and communication method," assigned to Toshiba (JP).
Abstract
According to one embodiment, communication device includes communication module, operation module, image generator, and transmission controller. The operation module receives user operation. The image generator generates a first display image displayed on a display screen of a target device. The transmission controller performs, when there are contents to be transmitted to the target device and requiring copyright protection, controlling so as to generate the first display image comprising the contents to be transmitted and to transmit the generated first display image to the target device in a certain copyright protection system. Further, the transmission controller performs, when there are contents to be transmitted to the target device and requiring no copyright protection, controlling so as to generate the first display image comprising the contents to be transmitted and an image corresponding to the user operation and to transmit the generated first display image to the
