On Tuesdays the USPTO issues new patents. Both of today's Spotlight Patents concern aspects of digital watermarking, which continues to be a hot topic. Assigned to Music Gate, the first patent addresses techniques for synthesizing electronic transparent audio watermarks. Assigned to Toshiba (JP), the second patent addresses techniques for generating electronic watermarks.
7,612,276, "Method and system for synthesizing electronic transparent audio," assigned to Music Gate.
Abstract
A method and system for synthesizing electronic watermarks is disclosed. The method includes generating electronic watermark sounds for music data by converting harmonic overtones that match the music data into signals. The generated electronic watermark sounds are then synthesized into the music data. The synthesized electronic watermark sounds and the music data are then output via various ways. In one embodiment, an encoded music file is generated, which can be sent to a recipient via a network or recorded on any of various recording media for distribution.
7,613,319, "Electronic watermark generating apparatus, method, and program for generating electronic watermark," assigned to Toshiba (JP).
Abstract
An electronic watermark generating apparatus color-converts an RGB image, and divides the color-converted image into a plurality of blocks. Then, the apparatus embeds to-be-embedded information as an electronic watermark into blocks in which an irreversible compression image has been quantized, the image being produced by carrying out quantization on a block-by-block basis, and restores the RGB image by carrying out de-quantization with respect to the blocks. The above apparatus color-converts the restored RGB image, and divides the color-converted image into a plurality of blocks. Thereafter, the apparatus carries out quantization on a block-by-block basis, and extracts to-be-embedded information from the thus quantized blocks. The apparatus embeds the to-be-embedded information as an electronic watermark again in the quantized blocks when it is not checked that the to-be-embedded information has been correctly extracted.
