On Tuedays the USPTO issues new patents. Both of today's Spotlight Patents concern aspects of copy protection. Assigned to LG Electronics (KR), the first patent addresses techniques for encoding and using copy protection information in Blu-ray discs. Assigned to Gateway, the second patent concerns an optical jukebox with copy protection caching and caching copy protected data.
7,599,274, "Recording medium with intermittent or alternate wobbled pits and apparatus and methods for forming, recording, and reproducing the recording medium," assigned to LG Electronics (KR).
Abstract
A recording medium, such as a high-density and/or read-only recording medium, such as BD-ROM, which contains a control information, such as copy protection information, encoded in intermittent or alternate wobbled pits, and to methods and apparatuses for forming, recording, and reproducing data on the recording medium.
7,600,266, "Optical jukebox with copy protection caching and methods of caching copy protected data," assigned to Gateway.
Abstract
A copy protection comprehending cache catalog with a media jukebox tracks not only the titles of the media themselves, but also the number of copies of each media title, and the copy protection status of each media. When a particular media is not limited to a set number of licensed users, then this media alone is permitted to be used to support multiple users with the hard drive cache in the media jukebox. If, however, a particular media title is limited to one licensed use at a time, per copy of that title, then the hard drive cache is capable of sending data to match the number of copies of media in the jukebox.
