On Thursdays the USPTO publishes new patent applications. Both of today's Spotlight applications address copy protection / rights management for recording devices. Assigned to Sony, the first application discloses a security module in a recording device. The second application discloses copy protection techniques for devices, no assignee given.
20080072040, "Data transmitting system and method, drive unit, access method, data recording medium, recording medium producing apparatus and method," assigned to Sony (JP).
A security module is provided in a data recording medium, data to be written to the data recording medium is encrypted with an content key different from one data to another, and the content key is safely stored in the security module. Also, the security module makes a mutual authentication using the public-key encryption technology with a drive unit to check that the counterpart is an authorized (licensed) unit, and then gives the content key to the counterpart, thereby preventing data from being leaked to any illegal (unlicensed) unit. Thus, it is possible to prevent copyrighted data such as movie, music, etc. from being copied illegally (against the wish of the copyrighter of the data).
20080072072, "Recording Device and Recording Method," no assignee given.
To prevent the user from moving a content on a bound recording medium to another storage medium more than the maximum number of times permitted by its copyright holder. A recorder includes: a bound recording section for bound-recording at least one data file and at least one management information file for a content; a control section for giving an instruction to move the content to a storage medium; and a drive for recording the content's data on the storage medium. The management information file includes access information for accessing the data file. In response to the instruction to move, the bound recording section reads the data file of the content in accordance with the access information and outputs the content's data, the drive records the content's data on the storage medium, and the control section makes the access information unavailable.
